He engages his audience and motivate them by drawing them in through inspirational storytelling and  group interaction. He's charismatic, funny and sometimes irreverent but it all works and he's developed a reputation as an excellent public speaker.

Testimonials

" As a third generation Independent Living Center executive director I have to be keenly aware of revisionist history. Many of the founders of our movement have moved on or passed on. I have had the opportunity to work with Charlie Carr as a Peer in his role at a center, Contractor in his role in government, and Mentor in his role as an advocate. Charlie is a source our organization turns to whenever we are considering growth and change. His advice always points us to the independent living philosophies and tennents developed by the founders of our national independent living network of which Charlie is one. Charlie's on-site training with our staff has been the highest rated most talked about of all outside training resources engaged by our organization. Independence Associates looks forward to working with him in the future." Steven Higgins, Executive Director, Independence Associates

"Charlie recently spoke at my Disability Policy course class, that I teach at Brandeis University. He taught the students about the independent living movement as well as employment policy initiatives and challenges. His talk provided a wonderful perspective that enabled my students to understand how policy is developed and implemented. Charlie's real life examples opened the eyes of many students. In fact, several students expressed how much they enjoyed Charlie's talk. I am hoping he will speak to my class again next year." Robyn Powell, Instructor, Brandeis University

"I have known Charlie Carr, both personally and professionally, for over 30 years.  During that time he has shown himself to be a champion of disability rights both at the State and National levels.  He is one of the founders of independent living in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. His knowledge of independent living and disability rights and history covers the periods of fighting for deinstitutionalization, to the Americans with Disabilities Act, to transitioning people from nursing homes to the community setting of their choice.  He has never wavered in his philosophy that all people are created equal and that includes people with disabilities. His career has spanned more than 20 years as the Executive Director of the Northeast Independent Living Program; an 8 year appointment, by Governor Deval Patrick, as the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission; to his current consultant business for disability issues, the most important of which is health care policy. I am glad to call this man my friend, my peer and my ally in the continuing fight for disability rights."
